School pupils share career aspirations with top Tory peer

Leading Conservative politician Michael Heseltine listened to students share their aspirations for the future during a trip to Gosport.

The former Deputy Prime Minister went to Brune Park Community School to see how pupils are benefiting from its bid to create stronger links with the business world.

Lord Heseltine also gave out advice about the importance of dreaming big.

He was invited along by Portsmouth and SE Hampshire EBP which is helping students at the school to get work experience placements with reputable companies.

Lord Heseltine sat around a table with youngsters and said he felt inspired about the way they spoke about the careers they wish to embark on.

Will Campbell, 15, want to be a chef and has done some work with Thurling Catering in Gosport.  “Its helpful that Lord Heseltine is here, he has ambition to link us up with businesses’ he said, ‘ it is important because it will help us and others in the future get closer to where we want to be.”

Bethany Clements, 16, who dreams of being a nurse, said; “it’s been really interesting to find that he has been through all of this and he knows what we need to do”.

Lord Heseltine praised the bridges being built between schools and employers and said; “It’s important that politicians get out there and talk to people on the ground”.  We have a school here which is determined to achieve the highest standards. The Education Business Partnership is very important service.  Its important that kids are given the best opportunities.  I was at a primary school last week where the six and seven year olds had ideas of what their careers should be.  It’s great to see that they are interested”.

Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage, who attended, said “The most valued commodity in the modern workforce is an educated workforce.”
